Along very similar lines to Pageflakes, Aaron I am posting a link here for everyone in the Teachers 2.0 Ning to try a vital extension to their Mozilla Firefox 2 browser. AllPeers from http://www.AllPeers.com is an open-source, freeware extension for the Mozilla Firefox 2 browser. AllPeers is a file-sharing tool that runs right in your browser. Once installed, users get a buddy list pane in Firefox. It's very easy to kick off file transfers to people on the list: you just drag files or links from your file window or from inside your browser.
This powerful extension allows building a social network and sharing files on a P2P basis. It uses a darknet style of peer-to-peer secure encrypted communication model; files and information shared between users are only accessible as long as the users have each other on their respective access lists - their 'trusted private network'. AllPeers beta version was launched on August 24, 2006, and is still currently in development. It works nicely on both Windows, Linux and Mac, which, once downloaded, becomes a toolbar in Mozilla Firefox 2.
Even though it is closed-source, it uses open source BitTorrent technology. The extension cleverly does not require any ports be opened so one remains under the radar of the IT departments of most companies and schools. AllPeers encrypts its communication using standard protocols like SSL so as to protect the user against 3rd party intervention or malicious listening in. AllPeers at the start of its beta launch was a huge 200,000 lines of C++ and JavaScript code. In less than a year it has become my #1 collaborative software tool.
Whomever wishes to try it please drop me a message here let me know when any of you have it running as I would dearly like to add you to my growing list of AllPeers users!
