Teaching in the digital age.

Hi All,

Is anyone using student-created voicethreads in the classroom? I am trying to find others who have successfully used this app so I can show my students some exemplars. Middle or high school student examples would be great, but any examples will do. If you have any tips or suggestions about getting students going with Voicethread, please comment here!

Thanks for your help and collaboration,
Liz

Hi Liz,
I teach kindergarten but I have several examples of voicethreads on my classroom website www.ecakinderkids.weebly.com. The voicethread website also has a lot of cool voicethreads posted for the public to look at.
Good luck,
Amie

I loved the voicethreads on you site, can you tell me how you did it with kindergarteners. Not how you created the voicethread I know how to do that. How did you record them in the classroom and manage all the other students. How did you get it all put together by yourself or did you have students do it. I have done them before with students, but wonder if you have any tips about how to do it with students.

I've been using it for the first time with my year 7s (12y/o) with success. If you send me an email to cfostersensei@gmail.com I'll send you some examples.

I have used it with my grade 5/6 students. Most of the threads they created part of and then we put all the student pieces together to create a finished piece. I think the key is to have an audience in mind. A thread that no one comments on is not very motivating for students. If you can find another class studying the same topic (or at least interested in it) to view and comment on your student created threads, you will find they put more effort into the finished product. If you can create threads collaboratively with another group of students at another school it works even better. If you create anything my students could comment on, send along the thread links. We routinely look for student created threads and I have my students comment. You can see our threads if you type coalhurst elementary into browse at voicethread.com. The "Data Collection" thread was done with a group of students in Minnesota. We are in Alberta, Canada! We have plans to do a thread for a group of students in Badelona, Spain in early May. Not sure how it will turn out, but the students are very excited to be developing virtual relationships with students in other parts of the world,

I tried my first voicethread last week with 7th grade mythology. Experimenting, just plunging ahead trying to figure this out. I had 16 students make mythology collages, (did on PPT or Keynote slide) saved as jpgs. I uploaded all 16 jpgs to my free account with voicethread. Next I "added 16 identities" so they can comment on each other's collage. Because this was done under my account with my e-mail and password, the actual commenting to take place this week will no doubt be a hassle as I login on each of their laptops. I just don't want them having my e-mail and password because they get carried away with the "social" aspect of this, good and bad. Anyway, I'm just learning and keep searching to see what other people have done with this free account that seems to have huge potential. I like the ability to interact, seems to have a nifty format, and the audio comments are neat. I too want to use this in the best way, so am hoping to get suggestions from others.

I have used it to retell native stories. Each student created on part of the story and drew a picture. Then the pictures were scanned and uploaded to voicethread. The students then each recorded the dialogue for each part. When it was finished it was a retelling of the story. I think maybe as a discussion to a book would also be nice.
