Sounds excellent - I've created a wiki for us to work in on wikispaces. email me your email address to cfostersensei@gmail.com and I'll be able to add you in. I am happy to make the wiki as public or private as you like. I can't think of any reason not to make it publically available but we may want to limit editting rights to avoid confusion down the track. Having said that, there is no reason that many people couldn't be involved BUT in the design specifications but still work in pairs as we intend. But that is probably 100 steps down the road than where we are at on this sunny friday afternoon.
Good idea - I think that will work really well. We could add an element of the 'things/people left behind' when societies leap forward a la Meiji and people today.
In terms of collaboration maybe we could have a core product - like the time line app you gave me the link for (names escapes me right now) that the kids in international-partnerships populate with content. or run two timescapes in parrallel....
I just checked out zipity - looks great...I asw something similar where the kids made time lines but this seems more engaging.
As for the format - subject material asside - I wonder how we can maximise the collaboration between our students on this assignment?
Maybe voicethreads are another idea - or maybe we don't have to limit ourselves to one app or another.
But back to content - the Meiji era would be idea for the reasons you mentioned although I should add that my class is a Japanese language class so we would find it hard to squeeze in a large amount of comparitive analysis to 2009. We are actually going to go to Japan on excursion in Q3 2010 so maybe we can exploit that too.
With yourwork in Technology, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.
Love the idea and any of the areas you mentioned (with the possible exception of the Russo-Japanese War) would be great. What sort of thing did you have in mind?

I am sort of thinking off the top off my head....
